If a cover crop is required (i.e.barley), sow at 4cm depth at a maximum forward speed of 7-8 km/hour.
Roll or furrow press to level and firm. On clay soil rolling should be done with a ridged ring (cambridge) roll and not a heavy solid roller to prevent capping. On sandy soil a heavy roller is fine.
Prior to sowing the grass seed, the seed bed needs to be firm enough to just leave a footprint when the field is walked on. Rolling after sowing is essential to ensure good soil to seed contact.
Sowing of grass/clover mixture immediatley after sowing of cover crop and rolling (the same day if possible). Drive slowly not more than 7-8 km/hour in order to place the seed properly and evenly in the soil. Sowing depth must not exceed 1cm. Cross sowing the field in two directions gives a faster ground cover quicker than a single pass in one direction.
