The DEFRA solutions for the improvement of natural beauty and diversification of habitat within the countryside are contained in the provisions of the Environmental Stewardship Schemes. This provides for Farmers and Land Managers to improve the countryside and be compensated for potential loss of productive land taken from the food chain.

The objectives of the scheme are to sustain and diversify the landscape, improve and extend wildlife habitats, conserve archaelogical sites and historic features, improve opportunities for the enjoyment of the countryside, restore neglected land or features and create new habitats and landscapes.
